Oops,

I forgot to add that the representation of the zoom could  be a
percentage bar just like Reinhard suggested. Could be placed in the LCD
Display instead of the actual mouse (but it would be interesting if the
mouse pointer to a looking glass with a plus sign, perhaps. Or something
similar.)

If it is going to a percentage bar, it would be nice to have the percent
unit next to it. .  (like this:)

Vertical Zoom
(#############____) 75% 

Horizontal Zoom
(#########________) 50%
