I agree with Reinhard. There should be some sort of visual feedback
(perhaps at the mouse cursor, to garantee visual cleanliness). The other
solution should be to show the (perhaps the percentage is the best unit
to use here) amount of zoom in the LCD Display.

Then when you pressed <ZX> or <Z>, it should select preset numbers,
whereas [ZX]+LR would allow you to select whatever number (or
percentage) zoom you wish, and the same thing for the vertical zoom.

I personally thing the percentage is a goot unit because its very
intuitive (its the unit that graphical programs usually use for
zooming.)
