Well, I ran the .exe you provided, and that just crashed. According to
windows, the crash happened in z.dll. So I recompiled and ran it, and
the result is exaclty the same as Kenneth's. 

Works fine though under Linux, so I don't think the error is in your
code. Could it be that zlib does not work as well under windows as it
ought to. Or that it's API differs under windows?
