I guess *right* approach it to use good _hinting_ (take existing font and 
manually hint it)
Any chance to take a look at fonts you want to *enhance*?
I am asking as it seems to me solution is more simple than grayscale bitmaps

Not sure about this.
PostScript was designed 20 years ago (aghhh..), TrueType - in late 80's - 
early 90's (say, 12 years ago)
Both displays and printers were rather limited at that time, and there was no 
need to add anti-aliased bitmaps to such fonts.

Probably, not.
AFAIK neither IKARUS nor Sun Folio formats support AA bitmaps (or bitmaps at 
all)
AGFA Compugraphic Intellifont also doesn't support bitmaps.
