Since all interrested parties are going to have commit access the
distributed nature of git will have no use. Subversion will be enough
and easier.
However since probably nobody knows how to convert git repository to
CVS or SVN so the git probably wins (for me, we have yet to hear from
Michael).

I prefer somewhat more conservative approach regarding the "main"
branch. (Is it called HEAD in git?)
I suggest the code in _main branch_ always compiles and last commiter
does not know about any new bugs. Therefore people will not be afraid
pulling changes from "main" thus people are kept in sync.
Other changes can be done in separate/personal branches which should
have almost no criteria. (Git does branching well I have heard.)

Everybody has an idea about a commit guidelines but I prefer if people
have roughly the same idea.
I can elaborate the proposal if you are interested.

I know CVS well. I can do that. But others (Joerg?) may know things
better. (I know nothing about savannah.)
