I thought that was my point.  :-)

So, given that the US courts listen to ethically disabled folks like
Mr. McBride, what positive good does an assignment do when they start
firing subpoenas?

And if the FSF assignment _is_ done properly, with all of the ducks in
a row, there certainly would still be __the same__ vulnerability, it's
just that the FSF has the option of shifting it to the author in the
case that the FSF loses in court.

The FSF assignment has legal benefits.  But AFAICT they don't have
anything to do with preventing or ameliorating SCO-like racketeering.
