A follow-up: Attached are two images; the first (from fontforge) shows
the shape if only pixel centers are switched on; the second (from
ftview, magnified) if dropout control is active.  Note that FreeType
always use dropout mode 2 -- it is a long-standing `bug' that this
can't be changed.

Werner, the fact that the drop-out mode is hard-coded to 2 isn't
a bug, it's a "feature" :-) It's the only way to get results that
match Windows in all cases.

Using the other modes, as specified by the font, results in misplaced
pixels.

I'm also attaching a screenshot that shows that Tahoma at 8ppem isn't
even displayed as monochrome by WinXP.

After all, there is a reason for the gasp table :-)
