Frankly, the problem isn't all that easy in the first place, and I
don't think you are going to get radically easier to work with than
auto*. I certainly don't find them particularly awkward. You can
doubtless get better, but I don't think you can get *much*
better. However, you can *fail* to solve the problem, and come up with
something that is radically easier. That's what most "replacements"
for auto* actually do, especially any hand-crafted makefiles.
