Actually, they've been able to split CVS repositories over multiple arch
branches or versions ever since Major called his first release done,
with the provisios that:

- Manual intervention is required (to determine where the version splits
belong; a repository-specific wrapper script familiar with local tagging
conventions is probably the best way)
- The functionality is *extremely* under-{documented,tested}.

Hopefully Robert's test harness will help that latter bit become less of
an issue.
