You caught me trying to simplify. We actually have a third branch called "builds". ("release" was taken)
foo--release--0.7------------------------------------- | | | foo--builds--0.7------patch-1---patch-2--patch-3--patch-4 | | | foo--builds--0.7.0---------------0.7.1------------0.7.2 foo--builds--0.7--patch-1 is a merge from release. foo--builds--0.7--patch-2 updates the compiled-in version number to 0.7.1 foo--builds--0.7.1--base-0 is a tag of foo--builds--0.7--patch--2.
