If you don't mind leaving Linux behind, and look into the *BSD world,
then you may check out OpenBSD. A meta-package exists there for
a year or even longer. To install GNUstep on OpenBSD you do:
sudo pkg_add -i gnustep-desktop
(given you have setup your PKG_PATH correctly)
Then to setup some basic things you look at the README that
comes with the meta package, and you configure your .xsession
file in order to start windowmaker and GWorkspace, and you are done.
