My opinion:Context menus are good. They provide shortcuts to all available actions of the active object. (The thing GIMP uses is a perverted bastard of a context menu. Do not even think about copying that.)
But all actions/commands in the context menu should also be available through the applications main menu nevertheless. (I don't know who had that strange idea of "hiding" actions in the context menu and make them nowhere else available - it's just braindead)
Context menus must not be detachable. Context menues are only valid in a certain context (therefore the name) and detachable context menues would lead that concept ad absurdum.
