I tried to compile swarm-2.1.148.20041022 on a SuSE 9.0 system following the instructions given by PJ:

#cd swarm-2.1.148
# mkdir builddir
# cd builddir
# CC=/usr/bin/gcc ../configure --prefix=/usr --enable-subdirs --with-defaultdir=/usr --with-jdkdir=my_java_dir

then

# make

the make process gave the following error:
