I don't remember exactly, but it pretty much boiled down to doing an
rpm -e on the binutils that was installed, and then doing an install
of the gcc related RPMS at
ftp://ftp.linuxppc.org/linuxppc-stable/software.  The removal of
binutils should force deinstallation of the egcs packages, libstdc++
and probably on an average system, a number of things that depend on
the C++ runtime library.  Then put all that stuff back with the latest
versions.  (binutils is the package that provides the assembler and
linker, and is `below' GCC.)

I'm not suggesting this if you can't affort to disrupt your system,
but it sounds like your system is in a suboptimal state, anyway.
