Yes, that sounds sensible IMHO. It would allow me to dynamically set my
preferences per working dir.

I might want to maintain an unstable and a stable version in several
directories and having update behavior automatically influenced by the
existence of a cert in the db does not sound too good to me.

Alternatively a special selector or command line option might be okay
also, even if less convenient.
