I read a few articles about portability to Mac and previous versions. Keeping
them here might be helpful.

This can be really confusing ... Should we keep things compatible with
bash-3.2 [https://tiswww.case.edu/php/chet/bash/COMPAT (which is
still the `standard' version for Mac OS X)] or even older ones?
