avrprog just solved all my problems i had had by that time. ;-)
I once started with a quick&dirty port of old UISP, but this has proven
unable to talk to my very first AT90S1200 experimental board then.  The
'1200 is very specific in its handling since the programming enable
command cannot be restarted.  Since UISP insisted on reading the device
ID first (which needs a valid programming enable sequence to be issued
before), it simply could not handle this device.  Eventually, playing
with UISP has destroyed the chip ID on that '1200 (it reads out as 0
now).  avrprog could handle all this...
