The problem with SGIs occurs with the 64 bit processors.
It is a major bit of work to get gcc going on R10000s. It really is
a GNU problem.
I have better references for the problem at work, I'll post them next
week.
But, a 5.3 executable of gcc will run fine under 6.2 or 6.3, and so could
be used to compile swarm.
The local SGI support says to not use -64 on the compilers unless you
need > 32bit addressing. -64 just makes for larger and slower executables.
