yeah, but I want to go over a 28.8 dialup, attach to a screen session, and
read mail/start downloads that way.

and yes, I've looked at tin/rn/slrn/nn, and they all suck. (primarily due to
lack of multithreaded operation; so I can't queue background tasks). they
were fine enough back in the days when your news server was also your shell
server/mail server/devel server (back then I read news with pine anyway);
but when latency gets bad and files get big (which I would guess is just
about everyone's situation these days), their limitations show.

if someone can correct me, please do. :)
