Don't be scared of the code.  If you spoil it, you can always just
download it again.  The worst that can happen is that it won't compile or
the program will crash.

I don't think it would be that hard, but you'd have to learn Emacs-Lisp. 
Just take a look at the source code of C-mode or some other mode.  It's up
to you whether you think this would be a good use of your time.  If you've
decided to try to learn the code of 3DLDF after all, then I don't think it
would be.  In this case, there are much more important things you could be
learning.

Of course, GNU Emacs itself is a large project with a lot of people
involved and active communication.

If anyone was really interested in a proper CWEB mode, someone would have
programmed it by now.

I almost always turn off syntax highlighting for any mode.
