Thanks to all for their comments.  I've added a short note to the
Wiki's glossary (for want of a more appropriate place) summarising
them.  

Tom, is it worth my while registering the lack of locking protocol for
library removes as a bug, or does that happen automatically for
failings you note yourself? ;-)
