it was a half-baked idea, and might not work.

if it were separate programs, one might do:
    $ convert_text --nl_is_eol filename
    $ vi filename
    $ convert_text --nl_is_eop filename

if one could do that with read-hook and write-hook, it might be
interesting.  that's all i meant.
