As a follow-up to my own just sent message, this earlier message from Paul 
Johnson
in regards to getting swarm to work on cygwin addresses the issue of which 
gcc to use,
I think:

This seems to answer my question as to which gcc to try; try the one
included in the Swarm-2.2 binary distribution.
