Hi.
Sorry to bother again and apologies if this is off-topic.
I am experiencing occasional complete system crashes with Redhat7.3. I have
an ATI xpert 2000 32MB video card and I use driver r128. The bpp (bits per
pixel I thnk!) default after installation was 8 bpp (found in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4) but this gave me some funny behaviour such as "colour
flashing" and errors such as cannot allocate color #04000.
I have Mandrake 8.1 installed on another partition on this machine and so I
looked at the XF86Config-4 file for that distro. It is set to 24 bpp.
Now, when I set bpp = 24 with Redhat7.3, there are combinations of events that
can cause the system to completely lock up (one such combination is to run:
jheatbugs, then open Forte, then try to print something from Galeon).
Another app that seems to cause breakdown is AbiWord. Anyways, I am not sure
if any one has encountered this kind of behaviour or has any hints as to what
to do about it but for now I can live with it (although it is sure starting
to feel like I am back working with Windows98!).
Take care,
geoff
ps. If anyone has a similar set-up, a copy of their XF86Config-4 file might
provide some clues.
