Perhaps on your first attempt you used 2.7.2, but then switched to
2.8.1?  Autoconfiguration results are stored in config.cache and *not*
re-tested on future runs in the same directory.  To be sure things are
recognized correctly, delete config.cache, or,better, blow away your
build tree and start over.

P.S. You're going to lose without Tcl/Tk 8.0.
