I started to see such messages when I upgraded some packages on the
Debian machine I use. I think (haven't checked) that it is GNU ld
(binutils) that became a bit more picky, recently. However, the apps
still work fine for me with /usr/bin/gcc (gcc-2.7.2.3) but not the
Debian egcc I now have).
