Alright ... I thought I had a handle on this ... maybe I do or maybe I
don't.
With this line in rc.conf:
spamass_milter_flags="-x -u sharedspam -r 15 -d rcpt"
and all else standard, the milter should run spamd, check for a local
user and use their user_prefs, resolve virtmap and look for local user
and use their user_prefs, then if no local or virtmap local user is
found, resort to "sharedspam" as the user.
My maillogs show:
info: setuid to localuser succeeded
and shows:
info: setuid to virtmaplocaluser succeeded
but I never see:
info: setuid to sharedspam succeeded
only:
Still running as root: user not specified with -u, not found, or
set
to root. Fall back to nobody.
For any pure virtual users with no local presence.
I tried Dan's suggestion of altering /usr/local/bin/spamd to change the
"revert to" user. But spamd just ignored the user_prefs in that folder
...
Do I have this right? Or am I whistling Dixie and giving myself a
headache.
Many thanks.
Daniel

Ok thanks ...
Should I see this line in the log with that you had me change?
info: setuid to sharedspam succeeded
I tried putting a rule in the user_prefs of sharedspam instead of
local.cf and it didn't appear to use the file.

No; you still need it. Otherwise spamass-milter won't even look for
usernames and SpamAssassin will just use root's settings alll the time.
