That's what the make clean uninstall/install does: It clears out all
the .o files in the build tree, clears out the modules that were
installed in /lib/modules/*/kernel/sound, then rebuilds the modules
and reinstalls the freshly built modules into
/lib/modules/*/kernel/sound... It's the damnedest thing I've ever
seen. I've checked at each step of the way, BTW, making sure that make
uninstall cleaned out /lib/modules/*/kernel/sound, making sure that
the ALSA modules subdirectory is empty, the *.o files are gone, etc. I
can't figure out where the problem is or why expanding the tarball and
repatching would fix it, either. :-/

That'll be the next step (after I try Manuel's "forcing the write"
trick).

I would assume that that's up to the driver, isn't it? I mean, if the
IRQ is set up with the SHIRQ flag, then wouldn't it *have* to share
the IRQ? I thought that modern sound cards didn't have to deal with
jumpers any more... Or do they? :-/
