Follow-up Comment #28, bug #60016 (project octave):

I pushed a fix that makes sense for me on the default branch:

I really think this isn't much of an ugly workaround and remains fairly simple
and consistent with what we do with other library special cases. If y'all
decide later that you don't care about the old name anymore, it's easy enough
to remove and start using the new variable names instead.
