lynx-dev Lynx segfault while using image viewers (3)

another stage of testing: with the cartoon gif file in a local directory,
i have tested with `lynx .' then tried to follow the link for the file.
the result is unpredictable between (but not within) Lynx executions:
ie sometimes the cartoon shows up correctly, sometimes Lynx crashes!
when it crashes, after the abort lines, i get an error message like:

  Couldn't open /tmp/WRVWig/L2368-530TMP.gif

is the problem with the randomly generated temporary directory & file names?
