rather than the well-meant but complex advice others have offered (smile),
i'ld strongly recommend compiling your own copy of 2.7.1 .
as long as you have ordinary user's access to Unix/VMS/Win32,
you can download & compile it yourself without bothering your sysadmin,
storing the binary (executable) & all the other files in your own directories.
that's what a lot of people do, me included.

goto  lynx.browser.org  for details & 2.7 & a link to a site for 2.7.1 ;
and come back to lynx-dev with any problems/queries.
