I spoke too soon. drafts are now defaulting to
~/.emacs.d/drafts/drafts

I removed any nndraft parts of my .newsrc.eld and have 

  (setq nndraft-directory "~/Mail")

in my init. Scuppered once again. Any ideas welcome.
