Interesting.  I've just taken the 2.5.2 tarballs and did a standard
build without changing any configuration macros:

  ln -s freetype-2.5.2 freetype2
  cd freetype-2.5.2
  ./configure
  make
  cd ../ft2demos-2.5.2
  make

Then I used times.ttf (Times New Roman Book version 5.07) from
Windows 7 to call

  grid -f 274 13 times.ttf      ;

attached you can find an image which uses the same zoom factor as
yours, and you can see that I don't get a horizontal offset.
