Sorry I forgot about that! Yes, you should disable the JPEG library linking with this option at configure time: 

./configure --without-libjpeg
You can disable all optional features, just run the configure script with '--help' to see all the features you can disable.
By the way, now that you are building from source, you may want to enjoy the tarball of the latest commit (made just a minute ago!) that has fixed many bugs and added many new things compared to version 0.18 (see second link below):
