All the failures are due to 'libjpeg.so.9', it can't find that now!

Probably since GNOME also depends on the JPEG library and Ubuntu has shifted GNOME to snap, it is creating conflicts there this time. Try installing libjpeg through 'apt' to see how it goes:

sudo apt install libjpeg-dev

Generally, you can install all the dependencies with 'apt' in one command (as shown in [1]).
