:) will see to it that .depend is generated. The include should always

Delete .depend and try it again. ;-)

The error occurs only when the file doesn't exist, which will be the
case when someone first downloads the source and tries to build it.

It really sad that this very useful feature has so many implementation
variations to make it none portable. :-(
