I've managed to login to fencepost-ssh through my workplace firewall, so
I'm happy.

The situation here is slightly worse than I said before -- http
connections have to go through an http proxy (and it is that which only
allows http/https connections).  But ssh is nice enough to let you
specify a command to do the actual connection, so I could write a simple
program that talks to the http proxy and forwards I/O through that.
