Yes indeed, the intermediate releases were releases which were known to 
compile without problems.
So making a CVS tarball should only be done if the CVS tree is relatively 
stable, so users can indeed test, instead of updating to CVS from time to 
time without knowing if it is compilable or has huge bugs in it.
After all, it seems that the intermediate releases were not so bad at all ;-)
