Umm... what is that a parameter for, automake, autoconf, something else?  
I'm used to reading configure --help and adding such parameters there if 
necessary, but this is before it gets to configure.

(FWIW, I use a custom ebuild to do the build here, but parts of it were 
copies from elsewhere and I freely admit to not groking autotools.  As I 
said, I know how to work with configure,but I'm quite clueless on 
autotools other than having the vague idea that they're more or less the 
configure for configure itself!)
