One other thing is the card only seems to work in 44.1 KHz (or is it
48 KHz?). I tried playing Maelstrom (which uses mono samples in the 11
KHz range) and the sound stutters badly (it sounds like the stutters
are repeated 3 times, but it could be 4). Has multiple sample rate
playback been addressed yet?

This is a known bug. Low sample rates seem to cause a strange buffer underrun condition in direct relation to buffer/fragment size. The workaround is to increase the buffer size until it stops. This can be easily done on such things XMMS plugins, but on something like Maelstrom you'd probably have to hack the source. ;P

Hey, does the Vortex lock the codec at 44.1/48khz at all times? I remember everyone complaining about when using S/PDIF on an SB Live, the codec is always locked at 48khz, recording 44.1khz audio is upsampled to 48khz, then back down to 44.1khz if you're recording at 44.1, and the same thing is done on output. Untouched 1:1 digital output/input is needed for real studio use. Apparently the Vortex IS capable of at least outputting untouched digital output, including outputting AC3 to an external decoder. Do we have any clue how S/PDIF works at all?
