Do you have a copy of Maelstrom? If not, I would recommend that you
try it (it's freely available) to see if the stuttering affects you or
not.

Also, I'm not 100% sure, but I think that Maelstrom uses its own sound
server... Even so, I've played it on a different system in the same
environment (KDE 3.1) with an Intel soundchip and there were *no*
problems with the audio.  :-/
