As one who has built Akinori Ito's "w3m" package and contributed code
changes to it (it *is* source-available), I can offer this:

Code submissions are acknowledged in his bundle (at least, one of mine
was, YMMV). I didn't submit it with expectations of retaining "ownership",
only of making the package work for other users of the same platform on
which I was building it.

The package is *not* GPLed. It does carry a copyright statement and has
its own license statement which Akinori Ito has translated into English

 "Use, modification and redistribution of this software is hereby granted,
  provided that this entire copyright notice is included on any copies of
  this software and applications and derivations thereof.

 "This software is provided on an "as is" basis, without warranty of any
  kind, either expressed or implied, as to any matter including, but not
  limited to warranty of fitness of purpose, or merchantability, or
  results obtained from use of this software."

For those who have mentioned odd w3m keystroke operations, there is an
option to build it with what it describes as "lynx-like" kew bindings and
I found them familiar and easy to use for the simple navigation steps I
was after. The current version can be "mouse enabled" as an option if you
