Why wait at all? doesn't "M-g M-g" refontify in no time?

Anyway, I tried to reproduce the situation you describe, and I seem to be 
unable to do that: modified C source seems to be refontified 
immediately.  Could you give a recipe?

I don't think all of them, but many.
