swftools team,
I'm trying to solve a font display issue with a set of Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) PDFs. After pdf2swf conversion, users complain that the Chinese fonts are unreadable. The font in question is "DKMEZV+-WinCharSetFFFF-H CID TrueType", it is embedded in the document. I think it is unreadable due to broken font hinting.
With stock Ubuntu 10.04 xpdf, the fonts are also unreadable. After installing the "xpdf-chinese-traditional" CMAPs, the fonts become readable in xpdf. However, pdf2swf on the same system (reading the same xpdfrc) shows no improvement.
I have tested with stock swftools-0.9.0 on Ubuntu, as well as swftools 0.9.1 and 2010-08-14-1108 - output is identical with all three. See attachment for verbose output. pdfinfo and pdffonts output below:
My questions:
- Why would the system xpdf start displaying the fonts correctly after the CMAPs are installed, but not the version of xpdf built into pdf2swf?
- How can I control font hinting for embedded fonts in PDFs?
- How can I substitute embedded PDF fonts with system fonts?
Thanks,
-Irving
