Permissions issue on the sub-folders when you extracted the g'zipped file?

Check to make sure that all the extracted files, and any installation folder
you may have specified with the '--prefix=' option, really do belong to the
unprivileged user, i.e. yourself.

I tried an install of

   swftools-2010-05-22-0954.tar.gz

as an  unprivileged user, and went aok.
