I think it is unlikely that Paul's problem with the Emacs memory problems is related to the problem on the Tru64. On the SuSE system, I'd suggest building Emacs from source, and specifying EMACS=/packages/bin/emacs to the Swarm configure (assuming you installed it with --prefix=/packages). On the Tru64 system, I'd first check the .deps files have sensible contents. It may just be that Java isn't working right, and that you should find an alternative binary package or build Kaffe. I don't know the status of Sun Java on Alpha anymore. Maybe you can get source code from Blackdown or something. I also don't know the status of Kaffe these days. I couldn't get it to work on Windows (Cygwin), but it's unusually problematic.
