Since the problem happens to me while I'm trying to build the rpm, but
not when I'm compiling "regular", it tells me that the problem is not in
emacs itself.
It makes me think there is something wrong in the environment that is
blocking Emacs from doing its bit.
I'm wondering if its not the limit on open files that is biting me.
What do you see when you type
ulimit -a
?

This is exactly where I come unstuck trying to build on HP Tru64 UNIX 5.1.
It does not crash but java-stubs.elc does not properly build the stubs. I
canot see why, but now I wonder if it is related to the SUSE problem.
I have tried three different versions of emacs: The HP suppplied one and
two more recent which I built myself.
Any suggestions?
