        Dear Dave,

always many thanks for your work; this is a late reply, but I've been working to the problem for a lot of time.

        My replies are below,

        Pietro

I rather think we ought to find out what is wrong with your system, rather than plugging in old rpms.

You are wright, my go back has been unsuccesful, but I'm an old Assembler code writer and I want to check all the little pieces of a puzzle (or, relating to the Bible, I'm Thomas ...).

I swear with one hand on the Bible that the RPMs for 2.1.140 do work here on several RH7.3 systems and for at least one new user this week in swarm-support, so I'm really puzzled why you get that one error. It seems to me almost as though some file in your tcl/tk distribution must be damaged. I will be stunned if swapping out the RPMS makes the problem go away.

        I made a check and
        rpm -V tcl tk blt
        gives no errors

If your RedHat system is on the internet, you might consider creating a temporary user account for me and privately emailing me the account name/pw. I keep having this suspicion that something obvious has gone wrong.

My notebook is rarely on the internet, but another Linux box of mine has the same problem and I'm sending to you a private mail with the access code.

Oh, well.

I found an old copy of that rpm, but I think you will run into problems going that way. hdf5 is very fussy about which gcc and glibc you have.

Anyway, I dumped them here:

http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/software

Note you are looking back a long time there. You might consider rebuilding hdf5 from the SRPM file.

        Dear Paul,
in the attampt of working around my problem with RH7.3 (java apps don't work due to a tcl/tk error) I'm going back to swarm rpm 2.1.94, that I remember were working on a Linux box of one of my colleagues.
So I need an old hdf5 distribution, but at
http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/Swarm/Swarm-2.0_RPMSforRH6/
hdf5-1.2.1-1.i386.rpm seems to be no more on line.
        Many thanks for your help,
        Pietro
