Inheriting raw access to the heatspace matrix instead of using a
method to get points made a big difference. I'd argue that's moving
in the direction of `algorithmic' because it involves some thinking
about how pieces fit together.
I think that a measure of distrust for `abstraction boundaries' is
appropriate, in general, but that over time one can learn to trust and
invest-in certain abstraction boundaries. Otherwise you can get stuck
on local maxima just jumping through hoops. But before I reveal too
much of my own psychology, I'll stop there. ;)
