I wonder if you would look at an app I put together called
celebrityHeatbugs. It uses pixmaps of famous faces in places of the
heatbug dots. That achieves the "easily-identifiable" characters part
of your problem. As for the continuous space part, I think you have to
settle for a grid with very fine mesh. After all, a computer screen is
a fine grid, not a truly continuous space.
